Keep it simple

Why simple fire protection solutions are often the smarter ones.

Keep it simple
In fire protection there is an old temptation: the bigger the challenge, the bigger the technical gesture should be. More special solutions, more custom constructions, more effort, more show. On paper that can look impressive. But impressive is not automatically wise. My principle has always been: keep it simple. Not simple in the sense of superficial. Simple in the best sense of the word: clearly conceived, properly verified, technically reliable and economically sound. This perspective is especially valuable for large openings or demanding applications. A project can quickly drift toward highly complex special concepts because every discipline adds yet another layer. Additional structures, additional interfaces, additional risks. In the end everything becomes more expensive, slower and more error-prone. The real craft often lies in understanding the situation so thoroughly that a solution remains which is strong without trying to look important. I have seen myself how much can be gained by following this path consistently. In a large industrial project with an unusual opening, an elaborate glazing solution was initially under discussion to guide smoke and heat in a controlled way. Technically it would have made an impression, but it would also have caused enormous costs. The better solution did not come from more theatre. It came from clean cooperation, precise analysis and the courage to rethink an existing product intelligently. The result was a solution that was far more reasonable economically while still meeting the protection objectives. This is not an argument against innovation. Quite the opposite. Good innovation is often recognisable by the fact that it does not celebrate complexity, but reduces it. Anyone who takes fire protection seriously does not need to inflate everything. They need to understand what truly matters: achieving the protection goals, securing operation, keeping costs under control and creating technical clarity. Simple is not cheap thinking. Simple is thought through. And that is exactly why it is often the more demanding solution.
